Troubleshooting and access

Delivery history and retries

Inspect notification attempts, failures, cancellations, and signal IDs without confusing delivery with completed work.

When to use it

Use retained history, receiver history, and diagnostics to distinguish accepted messages, waiting notifications, and failed delivery.

Example

A webhook request times out after the receiver might have accepted it. Doorbell records an uncertain outcome and may retry the same signal. Your receiver should use its stable IDs to avoid repeating work.

Set it up

  1. Open Messages for retained inboxes and accepted publications. Use list_agent_addresses to identify the address's inbox and receiver.
  2. Read get_delivery_history using the address's notifierId, or inspect receiver-wide history with get_destination_diagnostics.
  3. Inspect signal and message IDs, event count, omitted count, timing, attempts, and outcome. Drain can deliver one group across several signals.
  4. Repair the receiver before considering any retry or explicitly authorized replay. Check freshness and duplicate-work risk.
  5. Correlate IDs with the receiving workflow to confirm what it actually did.

Important limits

  • Delivered means webhook acceptance or MCP consumption. It does not mean completed agent work.
  • A timeout can leave the outcome unknown; a notification may have arrived even when Doorbell could not confirm it.
  • History shows up to 100 retained signals for seven days, not an unlimited audit log.
  • An eligible manual retry makes one attempt and keeps the original freshness deadline. It can cause duplicate work; it does not make expired work fresh.
  • Pausing, edits, or deletion can cancel pending signals. Requests already in flight may still arrive.

Troubleshooting

  • If work repeats, compare signal and message IDs, attempts, and agents selecting the same source before retrying.
  • If a failed signal is too old to retry, investigate the original message and arrange any needed work through your authorized workflow; Doorbell does not replay it automatically.
